As many know, there is more nickel in a lithium-ion battery than lithium, and nickel is now a critical strategic metal in the United States most recent list of critical minerals.
Critical minerals such as nickel, copper, lithium, cobalt and rare earth elements are essential components in many of today’s rapidly growing clean energy technologies – from wind turbines and electricity networks to electric vehicles. Demand for these minerals is growing quickly as clean energy transitions gather pace.
In 2022, the United States' nickel mines produced an estimated 18,000 metric tons of nickel. That decreased by more than 9,000 metric tons compared to production in 2015. The U.S. currently only has one domestic nickel mine.
